OH, SO TRENDY

 

You see there's a trend and want to cash in.

Good!  But think about this...

Forget trends.  You can't follow a trend and make a sale from anywhere except at ground zero in Hollywood where you blast in and make a few pitches while the stupid trend is still a trend.

Example:  I saw that family subjects were being made.  I wrote one.  It was good, got me noticed, got me a few meetings, got me a deal, in fact.  But as I was busily rewriting my script, what happened?

Several family films suffered box-office fates that made the Donner Party look like fun.  They died horrible, writhing demises that left studio heads chilled on anything with kids, animals or a character who didn't carry a bazooka.

Next came the short-lived western trend.  Now, I didn't jump on this puppy 'cause by then I had learned something of a lesson.  But friends did.  They saw the success of UNFORGIVEN and TOMBSTONE and said, "Westerns, yeah!" and off they went into a finger-flying frenzy attempting to write the next great whatever.

Big mistake.  We cannot cash in on trends, and you look like am idiot with no ideas of your own if all you've got is another version of last year's megamovie.

Think for yourself.  Be yourself.  Write what you want to write. 

I didn't.  Now "Go and Do Better."

You see there's a trend and want to cash in.  Yeah, right.  Like you can get a full screenplay written in time
for a meeting that needed to happen six weeks, or even months, ago?  Didn't think so.  The best thing to do when following trends is...
